Chin Na is the art of seizing and controlling, and is an element of all Chinese martial arts including Taijiquan. Today, most people practice Taijiquan to maintain health or cure sickness. For the last fifty years the martial aspects of Taijiquan have been ignored, and the art is now incomplete. Most practitioners no longer understand the martial applications of Taijiquan, or even that it is a martial art. For example, the concept and training methods of Taiji Jin (or Taiji martial power), and how to apply internal Qi in the martial arts have become an unfamiliar subject in Taiji societies today. As a result, actual martial applications of Jin and Qi, such as Chin Na or Cavity Strikes, are currently not popularly known or studied. To preserve Taiji's martial aspect, this book presents 85 Taiji Chin Na (Qin Na), the art of controlling an opponent through joint locks and cavity strikes. Taiji Chin Na is one of the four main martial training categories of Taijiquan (the other three categories are striking, kicking, and wrestling/downing the opponent). Of all these four, Chin Na is the most effective, practical, powerful, and easiest to learn. Once you have mastered Taiji Chin Na, you will be able to apply the theory and techniques to any other martial style you practice. If you are a Taiji beginner, Taiji Chin Na could offer you a key to enter the door of martial Taiji. Chin Na is effective, powerful and easy to learn. Includes Chin Na techniques from the Taiji forms and Taiji Pushing Hands. The theory and techniques can be applied to any Taiji style. This book contains detailed instructions and over 500 photos and drawings so you can teach yourself.

China can easily boast of its great martial traditions, which many would say is the richest in the world. There are a variety of styles from the north to the south that encompass an extensive repertoire of open-hand and weapon techniques. The ten chapters in this anthology illustrated this wide spectrum. Mark Wiley’s interview with Hou Faxiang presents a fundamental healing modality famous in China — qigong, the nourishing and practical use of internal energy. Its theory and practice is entwined in many martial art styles. In chapters two and three, Robert W. Smith, introduces us to two Shaolin style masters whom he met during his stay in Taiwan. Since Han Qingtang was the top notch expert in joint-locking techniques, Smith managed to photograph seven of Han’s fundamental techniques. General Gao Fangxian was likewise a practical martial artist with an overwhelming presence, even when smiling. In a technical section he shows the might of Northern Shaolin.Southern Hung Gar is the topic for the next two chapters. Allan Ondash focuses on special kicking methods usually done simultaneously with hand usage, making the kicks difficult for a defender to notice being executed. His chapter is followed by Mark Jensen’s interview with Kwok Wing Lam detailing Iron Palm history and training. Yang Jwingming is known worldwide for his knowledge and personal skills in Chinese martial arts, primarily Long Fist and taijiquan. I conducted a lengthly two-part interview that provides information about Master Yang’s early years in Taiwan through his martial arts career in the United States. Stephen Berwick is well-known as one of the first Americans to become a highly respected practitioner and scholar of Chen Style Taijiquan. The interview conducted by Richard Florence shows the roadwork Berwick took to make his dreams come true—to be part of the longstanding Chen Family art. The ninth chapter by Dr. Donald Cheung presents the unique “cow herding stick” as taught by Xiao Mingkui, a Praying Mantis and Chen Taiji practitioner. The final chapter by Jake Burroughs looks at how the head is used in various striking techniques as found in many styles. We hope you will enjoy the material in this anthology, the personal stories of dedicated masters, and the rare photographs of their history and techniques.

Tai chi ball qigong training is an important component of proper tai chi chuan practice. For martial artists, tai chi ball qigong training can strengthen the torso, condition the muscles, and increase physical power by using the mind to lead the qi. It can be a major training tool to enhance pushing hands ability. For general exercise, tai chi ball qigong training helps those who might overly focus on 'core body exercises' to strengthen their hips, knees, and ankles. You will improve movement of the spine, increase energy through various breathing techniques, and learn to move many joints properly at different angles. This book includes History of tai chi ball Theory of tai chi ball qigong Tai chi ball warm-ups Tai chi ball fundamentals Tai chi ball breathing Tai chi ball exercises Tai chi ball partner exercises Tai chi ball advanced practice In all my years of teaching, I believe that Tai Chi Ball Qigong is one of the most powerful exercises I have ever seen to rebuild the entire body's health.--Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming
