Motorcycles as motorcycles are meant to be: radical, stylish, subversive, raw. The Ride 2nd Gear continues to present the latest custom bikes and the best builders on the planet.
Men and motorcycles: a story that has vacillated somewhere between cult and cliché for years. Custom bikes, in particular, have a history that is deeply rooted in the spirit of freedom and change of the 1960s, as well as man's primal urge to build something with his own hands--or, in this case, tools. The Ride 2nd Gear is a showcase of the power and beauty of these bikes. The Ride 2nd Gear presents a stunning selection of recent custom motorcycles, as well as the small, local workshops around the globe in which they are built. Hotbeds of creativity and craftsmanship, these workshops are mostly run by single individuals and attract a small yet devoted community of fans and fellow builders. The custom bike community as a whole is united by its passion for the ride--one so strong that it is now attracting a younger generation. Whether alone or in a group of like-minded friends, in a city or in the countryside, just for the weekend or embarking on a long-distance road trip, these drivers are actively sharing and celebrating pure riding pleasure on their own unique motorcycles that are lovingly crafted with time, dedication, and technical expertise. From limited series to one-offs, The Ride 2nd Gear features the brilliant results of this process. Its pages are filled with bikes that offer extraordinary design and driving experiences. In fact, established brands are now acting on trends set by the custom scene whose bikes are often more radical and sophisticated because more attention can be paid to detail and each new idea can be fine-tuned to perfection. Some models shown in The Ride 2nd Gear stem from or are based on classic bobbers and choppers, Italian-style racing machines, plastic Japanese motorcycles, and rare BMWs or Triumphs, which may very well be up to 80 years old. Others are art bikes made for show or futuristic visions inspired by the aesthetics of science fiction, fantasy, or anime. But whether they preserve or radically expand on traditional craftsmanship, these custom machines are more agile, faster, and therefore more fun than anything produced in the past. Journalist and custom motorcycle expert Chris Hunter co-edited both this book and our previous release The Ride. Born in England, Hunter now lives with his family in New Zealand, where he runs the motorcycle website Bike EXIF. It is now the world's most popular showcase of custom bikes with millions of pageviews every month and a passionate global following.

A Special Thanks to Rick Bray of RKB Kustom Speed for allowing me access to his shop and photographing the building process of his rolling artwork called Deal Breaker. This photo book details the painstaking progress and fabrication of Rick's Kustom one-off build. RKB is located in Hanford, California, just south of Fresno. Rick has been building custom made motorcycles for over a decade; and over those years, he has won numerous accolades and renown in the industry, appearing in the Discovery Channel's #BikerLive along with countless motorcycle events and contests. Ricks build "One Piece at a Time" won him the Central California edition of #BikerLive. The last two years, he invested all his creative energy and time into crafting some beautiful pieces of rolling art for Las Vegas BikerFest. Because he had yet to earn the top spot in 'Vegas, year three showed him determined to win Deal Breaker with a drag style inspired motorcycle with a forward slap shifter. As this photo book details, over many months of design and construction, RKB had its ups and downs with this particular project, but with the encouragement and aid of friends and family, Rick was able to complete this build, and even have it showcased, before paint, at a Sturgis motorcycle art show. He enlisted his buddy and long time friend, Kool Hand Luke, paint up all his bikes, and this expert hand didn't disappoint, as usual. Just check out the hard work, detail, and dedication that Rick puts into his work and builds. Watching it all start from a few pieces of piping, evolving into a kustom rolling piece of artwork, was an incredible experience and one I had to enthusiastically document and share.
The evolution of the automotive transmission has changed rapidly in the last decade, partly due to the advantages of highly sophisticated electronic controls. This evolution has resulted in modern automatic transmissions that offer more control, stability, and convenience to the driver. Electronic Transmission Controls contains 68 technical papers from SAE and other international organizations written since 1995 on this rapidly growing area of automotive electronics. This book breaks down the topic into two sections. The section on Stepped Transmissions covers recent developments in regular and 4-wheel drive transmissions from major auto manufacturers including DaimlerChrysler, General Motors, Toyota, Honda, and Ford. Technology covered in this section includes: smooth shift control; automatic transmission efficiency; mechatronic systems; fuel saving technologies; shift control using information from vehicle navigation systems; and fuzzy logic control. The section on Continuously Variable Transmissions presents papers that demonstrate that CVTs offer better efficiency than conventional transmissions. Technologies covered in this section include: powertrain control; fuel consumption improvement; development of a 2-way clutch system; internal combustion engines with CVTs in passenger cars; control and shift strategies; and CVT application to hybrid powertrains. The book concludes with a chapter on the future of electronic transmissions in automobiles.
Choosing a particular bicycle conveys an attitude and a way of life. For a young generation, bicycles have now replaced cars as the vehicles that best express its identity and this book shows why. Riding a bike is easy. Once someone can do it, they will never forget how. Riding a bike can be addictive--in the best cases for life. Understanding the subtleties of contemporary bicycle culture can be challenging. Like it or not, choosing to ride a particular bike--whether an old-fashioned city bicycle, a high-tech machine, a mountain bike, a touring bike, a fixie, or a beach cruiser--means being associated with a certain lifestyle. Velo--2nd Gear explores these diverse bicycle scenes and reveals their histories, relationships, and insightful details. Alongside its presentation of especially attractive and unusual bicycles, the book documents how riders' accessories and styles vary just as widely as the bikes' tires and other equipment. It explains how each scene cultivates its own distinct codes through the choice of certain jerseys, caps, or bags or by visiting specific events or key establishments. The examples in Velo--2nd Gear span the globe. Tours in traditional costumes and on historical paths in Belgium or Italy are not only appealing as athletic challenges, but also as adventures for cosmopolitan travelers. In urban centers at night, bicycle messengers hold races on city streets. Specialized bike boutiques focus on details such as customized paint jobs. Frame builders in Oregon, Paris, or southern Germany create highly coveted bikes tailored to individuals or in very limited editions with long waiting lists. Velo--2nd Gear makes abundantly clear that contemporary bicycle culture is more alive and well than ever before. The book celebrates its healthy, environmentally-friendly, discerning, and slightly obsessive scenes and their protagonists. It shows why, for a young generation, bicycles have now replaced cars as the vehicles that best express its identity.

All roads do not lead to Rome! Some branch out, meander, ascend and wait to be explored by a traveller. A group of middle-aged friends, tired of the mundane, come together to explore the roads high in the hills of North Bengal on motorcycles. In their endeavour, they are spurred on by Balaji Devanathan, the Co-Founder of Red Panda adventures. While riding through the hills is a challenge in itself, a bigger challenge lay in first convincing themselves that they could ride a motorcycle once again after twenty years. High on the Hills is as much about their journey to achieve self-confidence as about the breath-taking locales they discover, tucked away in the Hills of Bengal.
