With so many new lighting technologies available for a wide range of visual environments, how do you choose the options that best address the needs and improve the quality of life for various groups? Focusing on applications and everyday use of light sources, The Right Light: Matching Technologies to Needs and Applications provides a comprehensive explanation of all light sources to be used as a guide to choosing the right lighting technology. The book supplies a quick overview of the main characteristics of the existing technologies in the market and suggestions for appropriate technologies for a range of applications from health related issues to safety and security. The author characterizes different lamp technologies based on the large number of parameters required when choosing a light source. He makes suggestions based mainly on the qualities of the light such as color/wavelength of the light, color rendering index of the source, and, in the case of white light, the color temperature. Other parameters such as the luminous flux or the lifetime may play a role in some cases. From the improvement of the quality of life of people in their working and living spaces, to road safety or treatment of medical conditions and from managing cancer rates to improving the lives of vision impaired people, the correct choice of light sources and the appropriate lighting design can indeed make the difference between comfortable and problematic everyday life or indeed life and death. Whether you design work spaces, public spaces, or living spaces, this book examines the different technologies and their properties in a way that allows you to find the correct lighting solutions and light related answers for any space.

Natural light can be the right light—indoors and out, all day long. Working with children, families, and couples, Krista Smith covers the entire process of designing natural-light portraits that are as vibrant and colorful as the personalities and relationships they depict. From early morning, through the tricky midday hours, to the end-of-day sunset shots, Smith shows you where to find the best natural light and how to use it most effectively for flattering results. She also explores the impact of weather on the quality of the natural light and demonstrates how it can be turned to your advantage for stand-out results. For indoor shoots, Smith demonstrates how one simple window can produce classic portrait looks and demonstrates simple background and lighting refinements that put you on the path to studio-quality results. From marketing and scheduling, to location selection and shooting, to product design and branding, this book presents a road-map to professional success in natural-light portrait photography.

How do theatre lighting designers decide what is 'the right light' for each moment of a production? What informs their choices? Why does the audience respond more strongly when the lighting feels 'right'? By interviewing 19 prominent lighting designers and weaving their insights through his own narrative, Nick Moran aims to answer such questions. This book considers practice across different types of theatre, including opera, dance, musicals and drama. Rather than being a technical manual, it allows lighting designers to contribute contrasting and complementary ideas about how to approach lighting design. Moran argues that the best stage lighting is made with emotion, passion and soul, by creative artists willing to take risks. Includes interviews with: Neil Austin – Lucy Carter – Jon Clark – Natasha Chivers – Paule Constable – James Farncombe – Rick Fisher – Mark Henderson – David Howe – Michael Hulls – Mark Jonathan – Peter Mumford – Ben Ormerod – Bruno Poet – Paul Pyant – Nick Richings – Johanna Town – Hugh Vanstone – Katharine Williams.

Disclaimer: I never heard of Mr Whitten or Sloan before. I only did when checking the reviews on other books on same topic and at that point I had already finished writing mine. My book was not published for several months (close to a year) because I was scared of all the hate of the other reviews. that I feel we should not act this way as the more opinions we get on a subject, the better we can be informed on it. Criticizing others because they write on same book topic is like trying to silence other doctors because you only want info from just one person. We should not encourage a monopoly. I apologize beforehand if part of my book resemble his (which is inevitable since we are writing on same topic). Thank you for reading.

Throughout the development of the American West, prostitution grew and flourished within the mining camps, small towns, and cities of the nineteenth-century Rocky Mountains. Whether escaping a bad home life, lured by false advertising, or seeking to subsidize their income, thousands of women chose or were forced to enter an industry where they faced segregation and persecution, fines and jailing, and battled the hazards of disease, drug addiction, physical abuse, pregnancy, and abortion. They dreamed of escape through marriage or retirement, but more often found relief only in death. An integral part of western history, the stories of these women continue to fascinate readers and captivate the minds of historians today. Expanding on the research she did for Brothels, Bordellos, and Bad Girls (UNM Press), historian Jan MacKell moves beyond the mining towns of Colorado to explore the history of prostitution in the Rocky Mountain states of Arizona, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. Each state had its share of working girls and madams like Big Nose Kate or Calamity Jane who remain celebrities in the annals of history, but MacKell also includes the stories of lesser-known women whose role in this illicit trade nonetheless shaped our understanding of the American West.

The goal of this research was to find out which automated enforcement programs have been successful and what contributed to their success, as well as which programs have been unsuccessful and to draw lessons from their experiences. This was accomplished through a comprehensive assessment of automated speed and red light running enforcement activity in the United States and Canada, which led to the development of guidelines to assist agencies in implementing and operating successful automated enforcement programs. Over 350 jurisdictions with current or past automated enforcement programs were contacted by survey and phone as part of the assessment. In addition to the survey, an extensive literature review was conducted to determine the effect of the programs, cost effectiveness, and resource requirements, and to get the perspective of the public.
